“Brands Hatch Southborough Classic” 2009
Under a cloudy but dry evening, the 2009 Brands Hatch Southborough Classic was held on Friday 10th July. A good crowd of riders and supporters turned up at the Kent Motor-racing circuit, to enjoy the racing.
In the first Youth race for U8’s, U10’s, and U12’s, 12 riders took part, riding 9 laps of a circuit of the Pit Lane and Brabham straight. Callum Mackie (Lee Valley Youth CC) U12 won by some distance ahead of Toby Martin (Team Darenth) U10. The first U8 was Ben Tulett (HHYCC) finishing 4th overall.
In the second Youth race for U14’s, U16’s, 14 riders took part, riding 9 laps of the Indy circuit. Hugo Humphreys (Lee Valley Youth CC) U16 comfortably won in a time just over 30 minutes. Some 20 seconds elapsed before Dante Carpenter (Fit-For) U16 sprinted for a second place finish.
Harry Franklin (VC Londres) was the first U14 over the line in 4th place.
The main event got under way with a strong field of 71 riders. The 3rd and 4th category riders led away from the start with a minute and a half lead over the Elites, 1st and 2nd Category riders in the customary Brands Hatch Handicap start style.
However the Handicapped Elites, 1st and 2nd’s powered round and caught the earlier starting group on the 7th of 25 laps (50km). The group remained as one despite several attempts from various riders to escape clear. Small lead splits continually formed lap after lap around Clearways, which stretched the group as they chased with the favourable tailwind down the Brabham straight, and the sweep into and down Paddock Hill bend, only to regroup on the challenging climb up to Druids.
The race finished in a bunch sprint led by Jason White (Cycling Bargains), ahead of Gareth McCullough (Medway Velo) and Dominic Schills (Lotto Olympia Interbike) in a time of 1hr 15 mins.
A surplus donation from the event will be made to the Dave Rayner fund.
I would like to thank the Southborough Wheelers members who once again voluntarily assisted on the evening with the event, and to “Bikefood” for providing additional prizes. I hope to repeat the success of this years event next year.
